Opened in the center of Kyoto in 1972, Kiev was named for a city in Ukraine, which became a sister city of Kyoto the same year the restaurant opened. Kiev’s founder lived in Russia when he was young, learned their language and culture and brought this knowledge back to Japan. Both Kyoto and Kiev were capital cities with rich histories and traditions. These connections are the reasons the restaurant was given its name.

At Kiev, we serve heart-warming, home style Russian cuisine. Our house specialties are Borscht and Pierogi (stuffed doughnuts). Since Russian foods are not so popular in Japan, we try to include local vegetables in our menus, thus merging our two cultures.

We have Russian vodka and beer, as well as wines from Ukraine and the Republic of Georgia. Georgia is known as the birthplace of wines.

We want to introduce not only the food, but also other Slavic cultures, and we would like Kiev to be where people respect and understand other cultures.

Our rooftop Beer Garden is open June-August. Here you can enjoy wonderful views of the Kamogawa river and mountains that surround Kyoto with Russian beer in your hand.
